Brevard College Senior Josh Rosen worked with Dr. Jennifer Frick-Ruppert, Executive Director of ACEE and an Associate Professor of Ecology and Environmental Studies, on the biology of the Blue Ghost Firefly (Phausis reticulata). These unusual fireflies do not flash, but glow constantly with a dim, bluish light. Because they were known from only a few locations in the Appalachian region, little information existed about their biology and distribution until Rosen and Frick-Ruppert began their work. As a result of their research, it is now known that only males fly (females do not) during a peak period from late May to early June, depending on weather conditions. The species is distributed throughout the southern Appalachians in areas of moist deciduous forest, but is poor at colonizing new habitats once eliminated from them. Friends of Dupont Forest and Tri-Beta, a biological research society, provided funding for the study. |
